At least three passengers were killed and 40 others injured as a Dhaka-bound bus from Bogra bus fell into a river breaking the fence of Pungli Bridge on the Highway in Kalihati upazila on Tuesday.
The identity of two of the victims could not be known till the time of filing the report on Tuesday night.
Police said the accident took place at about 1 pm when the bus was trying to overtake another vehicle on the bridge, leaving 42 people injured. Of the injured the condition of at least half a dozen people was stated to be critical.
On information, fire fighters rescued the injured passengers and sent couple of dozens of them to Tangail Medical College Hospital. Among the injured, three passengers succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.
When contacted from Dhaka Superintendent of Police (SP) of Tangail Sale Mohammad Tanvir talking to this correspondent on Tuesday evening said the condition of four five of the injured is critical. Many of the injured, he said, were released after first aid.
He said efforts were in progress to salvage the bus which plunged into the river Pungli. The spot of the river where the bus plunged , he said, is quite deep which was delaying the rescue process. The SP who had been to the place of accident said that the administration was looking after proper care of the injured passengers.
 Officer in Charge of Kalihati Monir Hossain said that they would try their best to establish the identity of the victims. The bodies of the victims were kept at Tangail sadar Hospital.
Officer in Charge of Tangail Sadar thana said of those killed the identity of one could be established. He is Alamgir Hossain, son of A Gafur Pramanik of villege Ushnakathi Madhyapara, Gabtali, Bogra. Efforts were on, he said, to establish the identity of the other victims.
