There have been allegations of slowness and use of low-quality materials in the construction of ‘Birnivas’, a residence for 9 brave freedom fighters in Ishwardi. The construction work is not completed even in a year and a half. In the meantime, the plasterboards of some houses have started to fall. Due to these reasons, the brave freedom fighters expressed their anger.
According to the office of the Upazila Project Implementation Officer, Ghulam Mahbubur Rahman Babul Sardar of Pakshir Bagheil, Khalekuzzaman Tokon, Omar Ali of Diyar Bagheil, Mohsin Ali of Ruktala village, late Akal Uddin of Pur city are the contractors for the construction of 9 houses for 9 poor freedom fighters and their families. About 14 lakh 65 thousand taka is allotted to each family for the construction of residence. The contracting firm Montu Sheikh Enterprises has got the construction of Birnivas. In June 2022, the construction of Birnivas started. Three months after the start of construction, the contractor suddenly stopped work. In this regard, the victim freedom fighters filed a written complaint with the upazila project implementation officer. However, the work of the house remains unfinished.
On the surface, it can be seen that the construction of some houses has been completed but the plastering has not started. The exterior plastering and painting work of some houses has been completed but the interior work has not been completed. Sewage houses are kept open in the yard of the house. Being open there is a possibility of someone falling and causing an accident. Even though the work of two houses is 90 percent completed, the plaster inside the house has already started falling due to the use of low-quality materials. Windows and doors are rusted. The freedom fighters present at the scene showed their houses and expressed their anger.
Freedom fighter Golam Mahbubur Rahman Babul Sardar said, I thought I would spend the rest of my life safely when I got home at the end of my life. Now it seems that I may not be able to climb this house again while alive.
Freedom fighter Khalekuzzaman Tokon said that the house will be handed over six months after the start of work. But a year and a half passed, I did not find a house. I can’t say whether I will get it.
Contractor Montu Sheikh said, there was a delay in getting the running bill of the work. Due to some personal issues, the work of Birnivas is also stopped. I will start working shortly.
Upazila Project Implementation Officer (PIO) Touhidul Islam Prince said that the contractor has been urged to start the work after receiving the written complaint of the freedom fighters. The contractor asked for time stating some of his problems. However, the contractor said that he will start the work soon.
