Dr Yunus’s verdict Jan 1

The Third Labour Court of Dhaka, on Sunday fixed January 1 to deliver the verdict in a Labour Law violation case filed against Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus and three top officials of Grameen Telecom.

On Sunday at about 8 pm, Judge of theThird Labour Tribunal Begum Sheikh Merina Sultana passed the order fixing date to pronounce the verdict of the case.

At about 6.35 pm Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun concluded the submission of argument on behalf of Dr Yunus. Earlier, the submission of argument begun at about 11.30 am.

The defense lawyers sought acquittal of the four defendants including Professor Yunus while on behalf of Inspection for Factories and Establishments Department (IFED) Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan claimed exemplary punishment to the court for Dr Yunis.

According to the case documents, IFED officials on August 16, of 2021, inspected the office of Grameen Telecom in the capital’s Mirpur area and several violation incidents of the Labour Law.

On August 19 of that year, the department sent a letter to the authorities of Grameen Telecom, mentioning that 67 of its employees were supposed to be made permanent employees. But it was not done so, the case statement said.
