The country’s apex body of handicraft manufacturers launched a five-day exhibition on Wednesday to promote their products.
Bangladesh Handicrafts Manufacturers and Exporters Association, popularly known as Banglacraft, organised the event titled ‘Bangabandhu Jonmo Shoto Barshiki Mela 2021’ at its office in the capital.
Golam Ahsan, president of the association, formally inaugurated the showcase while a good number of members of the association were present there, said a press release.
In his speech, Mr Ahsan said the handicraft sector is contributing to the country’s economy in many ways for more than 40 years.
He said export earnings from the handicraft sector increased by 49 per cent during the Covid-19 pandemic period than that of previous times. It is good news for the industry and also for the country.
This exhibition will help the manufacturers to develop their quality of products as well as enhance competitiveness, he hoped.
He also said they are facing various obstacles to run their business during this pandemic.
They sought necessary supports including ensuring raw materials, creating the required number of artisans and ensure research works to tap the international market.
Bangladesh exports handicraft goods to over 50 countries. The exportable items comprise handmade attires, various items made with cane and jute, baskets, showpieces, terracotta, pottery and handmade carpets etc, according to manufactures.
