The High Court has ordered not to arrest or harass BNP leaders Sadek Hossain Khoka, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and Golam Akbar Khandaker in any fresh case.
Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice Md Habibul Gani gave the order after hearing three writ petitions on Monday.
Lawyers Joynul Abedin, Mahbub Uddin Khokon represented the petitioners. They were assisted by Barrister Ragib Rouf Chowdhury and Sagir Hossain Leon. Deputy Attorney General Md Mokhlesur Rahman represented the state.
Speaking to the news agency, Rahman said the three BNP leaders should not be arrested or harassed in any new case filed against them in keeping with the High Court's order. Mahbub Uddin Khokon said the government was filing cases considering the seniority of the leaders-the more senior a leader, the more cases are filed against him or her. BNP leader Khoka has around 40 cases filed against him. Even cases were being filed against BNP joint secretary general Rizvi and organising secretary Akbar one after another, he said.
"That is why, their wives petitioned the High Court." Police had on Nov 28 arrested Akbar in front of the BNP's office in Chittagong city and on Dec 4 Khoka at a house of Uttara in Dhaka.
Police had on Nov 30 arrested Rizvi from inside the party's central office in Dhaka City's Naya Paltan.
