Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan has described terror attacks on churches and luxury hotels in Sri Lanka as heartrending and ruled out similar threats in Bangladesh.
"Law-enforcement agencies are ready to face any situation," Khan told reporters as he visited the residence of Awami League leader Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim at Dhaka's Banani on Monday. Selim's grandson Zayan Chowdhary was among 290 people killed in the suicide bomb blasts in Sri Lanka on Sunday. His son-in-law Moshiul Haque Chowdhary Prince was also injured and hospitalised, according to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, a relative of Selim.
The minister visited Selim's family to offer his condolences. "Our security forces are always on the alert. We do not have such information that this type of incidents can happen here."
"Still, we kept a watchful eye on our churches during Easter Sunday. Our security forces were also cautious about Shab-e-Barat."
Referring to Sri Lanka attacks, Khan suggested increasing international cooperation to counter terrorism.
