AL factional clash leaves 50 injured in Noakhali

At least 50 persons sustained injured when a clash broke out between two rival groups of local Awami League at Chaprashirhat Bazar under Companyganj upazila in Noakhali district on Friday afternoon.
In order to bring the situation under control, police charged batons, fired blank shots and lobbed tear shells on the people locked in the clash.
Witnesses said the chase and counter-chase broke out at about 4:45pm in front of the Awami League office at Chaprashirhat Purbo Bazar. At one stage, both the rival groups locked in clash.
Locals said the clash broke out between the two rival groups belonging to Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader's younger brother Abdul Quader Mirza, and Companyganj Upazila Awami League organising secretary Mizanur Rahman Badal.
Those who injured in the clash were Char Fakira Union Chhatra League president Mehedi Hasan, Ruhul Amin, Mehrab, Bappi, Kamal Patwary, Shaon, Shamim, Delwar Hossain Master, Nosu, Kamrul Hasan, Nurul, Farhad, Masud, Kanchan, Raihan, Delwar, and Borhanuddin Muzakkir. Of them, newsman Borhanuddin Muzakkir, Nurul, Farhad and Kanchan received bullet injuries. They are now undergoing treatment at Companyganj Upazila Health Complex.
Local sources said former Upazila Chairman Mizanur Rahman Badal asked his
followers to assemble at the party office at Chaprashirhat at 4:30pm. But, a group of people led by Char Fakira union chairman Jamal Uddin Liton went there earlier. When the supporters of Badal went reached there, an altercation triggered with the followers of Liton. At one stage, followers of both groups engaged in chase and counter-chase, clash and firing, leaving more than 50 people injured. Barta Bazar Patrika's local correspondent Borhan Uddin Muzakkir received bullet injuries when he went there to collect information for his report.
Meanwhile, following the clash, Obaidul Quader's younger brother and Basurhat Pourasava mayor Abdul Quader Mirza appeared on Facebook live and alleged that his party leaders and activists were attacked by Badal group.
He claimed that some 50 leaders and activists of his party were injured in the clash.
Abdul Quader Mirza also said, "If any of my party leaders and activists dies, my elder brother Obaidul Quader, Companyganj Upazila chairman Shahab Uddin, Ekramul Karim Chowdhury MP, Nizam Hazari MP and former Upazila Chairman Mizanur Rahman Badal will be held accountable."
He also claimed that his leaders and activists were shot with the help of local police.
Companyganj Police Station inspector (Investigation) Rabiul Huque said 10-12 rounds of teargas shells were lobbed to bring the situation under control.
