23 April 2021

Court Correspondent :
Five top leaders of Hefajat-e-Islam and Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish were placed on different terms of remand in three cases filed with Paltan Police Station over the 2013 mayhem and recent violence in Dhaka.
The five are: Hefajat's Assistant Secretary General Khurshid Alam Kasemi, also Nayeb-e-Amir of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish; Assistant Organising Secretary Ataullah Ameen; Executive Member of Dhaka City unit Maulana Sanaullah; Vice-president of Dhaka City unit Maulana Jubair Ahmed; and Khelafat Majlish's Joint Secretary Mufti Sharafat Hossain.
Of them, Khurshid and Sharafat were placed on five-day remand in two separate cases filed with Paltan Police Station over the 2013 mayhem while Ataullah and Sanaullah were remanded for five days in a case filed with the same police station over the violence on March 26 this year.
Jubair was shown arrested in two cases filed over the 2013 mayhem and the recent violence in Dhaka and he was placed on 10-day remand for interrogation.
He was produced before the court today on completion of five-day remand in another case filed with Paltan Police Station over the 2013 mayhem in Dhaka.
Metropolitan Magistrate Md Baki Billah passed the remand orders after two sub-inspectors of Detective Branch of Police and a sub-inspector of Paltan Police Station submitted a 30-day remand prayer.
In the remand prayer, the IO said all the Hefajat leaders were directly involved with the 2013 mayhem and the recent violence in Dhaka. That is why they need to be remanded to gather information about the incidents and to know names and addresses of other leaders responsible for committing such offences, the IO added.
On the other hand, defence for the accused, submitted separate petitions seeking bail along with cancellation of the remand prayers, saying that they were implicated in the case as a part of conspiracy to harass them.
Upon hearing both the sides, the magistrate rejected the defence pleas and placed them on police remand in the cases.
Kasemi, Sharafat, Ataullah, Sanaullah and Jubair were arrested from different places on different dates in the capital recently.
