4 killed in Chandpur: 4 cases filed, 43 held Tension spreads: BGB deployed in 22 dists15 October 2021

Four persons were killed in a clash when the police tried to pacify a group of irate people at Hajiganj in the district of Chandpur, who were protesting getting of the Holy Quran in a puja mandap in Cumilla. Police confirmed that four persons were killed in the clashes on Wednesday night.
Hajiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Momena Akhter said all the victims were shot dead , while Officer-in-Charge of Hajiganj Police Station Harunur Rashid said the incident took place when the protesters gathered around the temple on Wednesday evening.
The UNO, however, could not say in details as to who shot them dead. After the incident, the local administration imposed Section 144 in Hajiganj on Wednesday night.
It is reported that several temples were attacked by the protesters in Hatia of Noakhali and Banshkhali of Chattogram on Wednesday night, local police said.
Hatia Police Officer-in-Charge Anwarul Islam said police restored discipline and arrested three people from the spot.
Earlier on Wednesday, several puja mandaps in Cumilla were also attacked.
Cumilla Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Kamrul Hasan told the media that they received information from the National Emergency Service number 999 that a copy of the Holy Quran had been kept in a temple. After that Police, RAB and BGB had been deployed there to control the situation.
The DC said although there were no more clashes after the incident, efforts are on to create unrest over the issue. Anwar Hossain, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Chattogram Range of Police said that at
least 41 suspects had been picked up in this connection, said our Cumilla Correspondent Ramiz Khan , adding that
the situation is now peaceful.
The district and the Police administrations said that they learnt from the National Emergency Service 999 on Tuesday that a copy of the Quran had been kept at the feet of the idol inside the puja mandap in Nanuardighi.
Upon receiving the news, the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police went to the spot with forces. The police recovered the Quran from there. But by 10'clock a news was widely spread on social media that the Qur'an was near the idol's knee.
Police have filed four cases over the tension triggered by desecration of holy Quran in Cumilla that led to the vandalism of several puja pandals and idols.
Cumilla Kotwali Model police sub-inspector, acting as the plaintiff, filed the case with the police station on Thursday.
Besides, the district administration of Cumilla on Thursday formed a three-member committee to investigate the alleged demeaning of the Holy Quran coinciding with the Hindu religious festival of Durga Puja.
Additional District Magistrate Md. Saidul Arefin heads the committee comprising three members. The two others Additional Police Superintendent M Tanvir Ahmed and Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Zakia Afrin are two other members.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said, the suspected accused are being quizzed over the Cumilla incident.
The minister made the assertion while addressing reporters after a meeting with top officials of law enforcement agencies at his secretariat office on Thursday.
