Global Covid cases surpass 315 million amid Omicron surge

The overall number of Covid cases has surpassed 315 million, with a spike in cases of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus across the world.
According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count mounted to 315,390,402 while the death toll from the virus reached 5,510,327 on Thursday morning.
The US has recorded 62,727,044 cases so far and 843,624 people have died from the virus in the country, the university data shows. The total number of Covid cases in the US topped 60 million on Sunday.
India's Covid-19 tally rose to 36,070,510 on Wednesday, as 194,720 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours across the country, showed the federal health ministry's latest data.
This is the fourth consecutive day when more than 150,000 new cases were registered in a day in the country, and also the highest single-day spike in over eight months.
Besides, 442 more deaths were recorded since Tuesday morning, taking the death toll to 484,655.
