Nearly 4000 tourists trapped as heavy rain triggers landslide at Sajek

Around 4000 tourists have been stranded as vehicular movement on Sajek-Khagrachhari road remaind suspended since Wednesday morning due to landslide caused by heavy showers in Sajek of Baghaichhari upazila.
Rumana Akter, Baghaichhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) said a huge portion of a hill collapsed at Nandaram in the morning, snapping the road communication.
Already Bangladesh Army has started work to clear the road.
Supirno Deb Barman, president of Sajek Cottege Owners Association said there are over 200 big and small size vehicles carrying tourists and many tourists had a plan to leave the place today but unfortunately they gottrapped in the area due to the landslide.
However,no causalities were reported till the filling of this report around 3 pm. Deputy Commissioner of Rangamati, Mizanur Rahman, said local people, local administration and army have been working to restore the road communication.  Meanwhile, communications on Sajek-Khagrachhari road resumed after six and half an hour of suspension on Wednesday afternoon after army personnel and local administration cleared the road after landslides.
Rumana Akter, Baghaichhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) said local administration with the help of army completed removing the landslide debris from the road around 2:30 pm.
