Brunei Darussalam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah is scheduled for a first state visit to Bangladesh from 14 to 16 October to talk on various bilateral engagements in energy, trade and employment. During his three-day visit, the Sultan will have meetings with President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina apart from other engagements with the high-ups, Foreign Ministry sources said.
Sources said that the visit will have 'special significance' for both the friendly countries.
Both sides are busy in various tasks on the upcoming visit and it is expected that a number of bilateral cooperation documents on energy, labour cooperation, direct air service, seafarers and cultural exchange will be signed at that time.
Sources said that Bangladesh was expecting a regular joint working group every year so that various bilateral issues can be sorted out and addressed.
On 31 August, a Foreign Office Consultation was held where both sides prepared a Memorandum of Understanding on fuel import, employment of migrants, direct flight and cultural exchange.
As Bangladesh is facing a fuel crisis after the volatile global crisis due to the Ukraine-Russia war, Bangladesh has been looking for alternative sources to get fuels to meet the growing demands of energy in various sectors.
Foreign Ministry said that Bangladesh has been working on the import of diesel from Brunei to meet its demand.
During the Sultan's visit, the issue will get special preferences, sources said.
Apart from this, Dhaka will seek cooperation from Brunei to assist in the resolution of the Rohingya crisis and dialogue partnership in ASEAN.
The visit will also focus on the Bangladesh migrants working in Brunei. Around 23 thousand Bangladeshi migrants are working in various professions in Brunei.
During the visit, Dhaka will urge the Sultan to take more workers from here.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited Brunei in 2019 and invited the Sultan to visit Bangladesh.
