Tangail road crash leaves six dead

At least 6 people were killed and 40 others critically injured in a head on collision between a Dhaka bound passenger bus and a microbus on the Dhaka-Tangail Bangabandhu Bridge highway.
The deceased were identified as-Jahirul Islam (55), joint Director of Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation in Jashore, Dulal Hossain (50) from Kutumbapur village under Chandina Upazila in Cumilla, Malikana Banu Rubi (65) and her son Rifat Al Hasan (40) from Jaleswaritola from Bagura, Tahmin (6), father of Abbas Ali from Agran village under Boraigram in Natore and Sushil Chandra Shill, father of Jagal Chandra Shill from Kutumbapur village under Chandina Upazila in Cumilla district.
The accident took place on Thursday noon at the roundabout east of Bangabandhu Bridge on Dhaka-Tangail highway in Tangail district on Thursday.The Bangabandhu Bridge Authority, Fire Service and Police rushed to the spot and conducted the rescue operation.
Police and eyewitnesses said the accident occurred in the area around 12.30pm, when a passenger bus of Ekata Paribahan bound for Dhaka from Chapainawabganj collided with a North Bengal-bound microbus from Dhaka, leaving three persons dead on the spot and 40 others injured.
Three others succumbed to their injuries on the way to the hospital, police said.
The deceased include all three passengers of the microbus and three bus riders, according to Md Kaiser, the district's Superintendent of Police.
Shafiqul Islam, Officer-in-charge (OC) of Bangabandhu Bridge East Police Station said that the dead bodies of three people were recovered from the spot and brought to the police station.
Critically injured were sent to Tangail General Hospital for treatment, he said adding that three more were declared dead by the on-duty doctor.
Rafiqul Islam, Bangabandhu Bridge Authority Assistant Security and Safety Manager said that Dhaka bound  bus of Ekata Transport from North Bengal failed its brake after crossing the Bangabandhu Bridge.
The bus while reaching the round area near Bangabandhu Bridge East Railway Station, the driver lost his control and overturned on the North Bengal-bound lane and hit a microbus coming from opposite direction leaving six people dead and 40 others critically injured.
He also said that, rescue operation is still going on and the injured have been sent to different clinics and hospitals for treatment.
Earlier on July 16, four people were killed and nine others injured when a bus hit a parked sand-laden truck on the Dhaka-Tangail Bangabandhu Bridge highway.
