BD’s first-ever kidney transplant from dead donor

Doctors at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital (BSMMU) have performed two successful posthumous kidney transplants for the first time in Bangladesh's history.
The surgeries were conducted BSMMU and Kidney Foundation on Wednesday.
A group of doctors headed by Renal Transplantation Surgeon Professor Habibur Rahman Dulal of BSMMU performed the surgery.
A 20-year-old patient Sarah Islam Oishorjo was the organ donor. She was suffering from various health complications, including brain tumour.
When doctors realized Sarah's condition was deteriorating to a brain-dead state, her mother gave permission for transplanting Sarah's kidneys and corneas.
Doctors transplanted both of her kidneys, and corneas, according to media reports.
The recipients of the kidneys were two female patients in their 30s, who are recovering well after the surgery.
Sarah's mother, Shabnab Sultana at a press briefing said: "Sarah really was a child from heaven. She used to charm everyone with her behavior everywhere she went."
"She told me I could donate all her organs for research. Sarah wanted her brain to be used for research work as well," added Shabnab Sultana.
BSMMU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Sharfuddin Ahmed said Sarah's name will always be remembered in the medical field of Bangladesh.
"Through her sacrifice, many would be aware of the procedure. Many people will get a new life," he added.
