1603 theft incidents occurred in capital in 2022

Syed Shemul Parvez :
Theft and mugging incidents are increasing in capital Dhaka with each passing day and residents of the capital have become very worried about safety.
Most of the mugging incidents are happening when police patrol are around.
According to the DMP information, at least 1603 cases of theft occurred in different areas of the capital in 2022. The number of thefts incidents in December was 95. In the last four months of 2022, about 530 theft incidents happened in the capital.
However, the DMP said that they were working hard and keeping a special watch in this regard.
Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) sources said that they are taking measures to prevent various incidents like motorcycles, mobiles lifting and cutting grills in houses from different parts of the capital. The DMP is also preparing a central database of thieves, the sources said.
It has been alleged that even though there are several cases, the members of thief gangs are getting bail very easily after being arrested at different times.
They again get involved in similar crimes after obtaining bail. These are professional thieves. The members of these thieves' gangs have experience of doing theft crime for 15 to 20 years, the DMP sources said.
DMP officials said that the work of creating a database by calculating the number of thieves who have more than one case is going on.
Those who are arrested in various theft cases earlier are being brought under the database, said DMP officials.
Officials said that earlier the police stations used to work on the database of such gangs of thieves. Now it is being done centrally. With a database, it will be possible to quickly identify who is involved in
various types of theft. This database will play an important role in identifying the culprit in any case. Law enforcement forces have been working on finding clues and evidence to any criminal incidents who are involved in such thefts, the DMP officials added.
DMP officials said thieves cannot steal motorcycles if they have an alarm system or special locks that cannot be broken. Only unsafe and motorcycles parked in an unsecured manner are their target, they said.
Additional Commissioner (crime and operations) of the DMP AKM Hafiz Akhter said, "When criminal activities go up, we try to bring it under control by conducting special raids. But it's very difficult to  get rid of it completely.
The official said criminals tend to commit crimes at the places where there is no CCTV camera. However, DMP is working hard and keeping a special watch in this regard. "The police stations and beats of the DMP have always been directed to check crimes in the city, he added.
Besides, various information such as which thief is involved in what kind of theft, which area or which time the thieves are choosing, are being investigated.
Apart from this, the sale of stolen motorcycles online platforms has come to our attention at various times and this is also being looked into by us, he further added.
