Bangladesh’s total labour force is 7.34 crore, 26.3 lakh are jobless: BBS

Out of the total labour force, the number of unemployed people in Bangladesh is now 26.3 lakh, according to the Labour Force Survey (LFS) released by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) on Wednesday.
Among them, the number of unemployed men is 16.9 lakh, and the number of unemployed women is 9.4 lakh.
According to the Bureau of Statistics, the unemployment rate in the country has decreased to 3.6 per cent, which was 4.2 percent in 2017.
The latest LFS showed that the total labour force rose to 7.34 crore in 2022 from 6.35 crore five years ago. Out of the total labour force 7.34 crore, currently there are 7.077 crore people engaged in work.
It is said at the meeting that this huge unemployed population does not even have the opportunity to work for one hour a week, according to the standards set by the International Labour Organization (ILO).
The ILO believes that individuals who are willing and seeking employment, but do not got the opportunity to work even one hour a week, should be considered as unemployed.
According to a report by BBS, significant changes have been observed in the labour market indicators over the past five years. The results of 2022 show a decrease in the unemployment rate.
There has been a significant change in the participation rate of skilled labor force in the workforce, especially with the increased participation of women in the labor market. The participation of women in labour force has now increased by 42.68 per cent, while it was 36.3 per cent five years ago
The participation rate of youth in the labor market has also increased. The participation of skilled labor force in agriculture and services has increased as well.
