Rule issued to give EC registration to Gono Odhikar Parishad

The High Court on Monday issued a rule upon the concerned bodies to explain as to why the respondents should not be directed to give Election Commission (EC) registration to the Gono Odhikar Parishad led by Dr Reza Kibria as a political party.

The High Court bench of Justice K M Kamrul Kader and Justice Khizir Hayat passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed Dr Reza Kibria.

Election Commission and other respondents have been asked to comply with the rule within four weeks, said lawyer Aklas Uddin Bhuiyan who appeared in the hearing on behalf of the writ petitioner.

Earlier on November 13, Dr Reza Kibria, Convener of a faction of the Gono Odhikar Parishad, filed the writ petition challenging the legality of Election Commission’s decision not to give its registration to the Gono Odhikar Parishad.

A letter signed by EC Deputy Secretary Md Abdul Halim Khan to Dr Reza Kibria on 29 August, states that Gono Odhikar Parishad will not be given registration since it does meet the required conditions.
