Staff Reporter :
The era of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Mehrun Runi’s murder is complete on Sunday. 12 years has already gone by since the killing of the couple in the capital, but motives behind the double murder are still shrouded in mystery.

Mahir Sarowar Megh, only son of the couple, was five years’ old when his parents were brutally killed at their home in Rajabazar area on February 11, 2012.

The families of the victims have got frustrated and lost hope of justice as no significant progress was found in the investigation even after passing an era.
So far, various investigation agencies have taken 105 times to submit the investigation report.

The people involved in the investigation cannot say when the investigation of the case will be completed.

The case is currently being investigated by the Thana Police, the Detective Police and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

Last January 23 was the date for submitting the investigation report of the case. But the investigation agency RAB could not submit the report on that day.

As a result, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shafi Uddin set the day for submitting the report on February 27. The date of submission of the report of this case has been delayed for 150 times.

According to court sources, the latest case was investigated by the elite force RAB Additional Superintendent of Police Khandkar Shafiqul Alam.

He could not be reached despite repeated attempts to contact him over his mobile phone to inquire about the progress of the case.

Meanwhile, Sagar Sarowar’s mother Saleha Monir has expressed her anger that even after so many years have passed since the murder of her son has not been brought to justice.

So far I have not found out who is the killer of my son. I will never get my son back. I have only one thing; I want justice for the murder of my son. I have not even visited my son’s grave till now.

I have promised that I will visit the grave on that day when I see the killers of my son. I will not visit my son’s grave without seeing the murderers, she added.

Runi’s brother, Nawsher Alam Roman, also the plaintiff of the case, said, “We have abandoned hope that the motives behind the murder would ever be unearthed as investigation officers have been seeking endless time to file the report of the case.”

A bad culture of not submitting reports on time is going to be introduced. It is very clear that the case has been covered up in a planned way, he alleged.

Our only demand is that the real criminals should come out, and they should be punished according to Bangladeshi law, he added.

When asked about this, the Public Prosecutor of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court, Abdullah Abu said that the journalist couple Sagar-Runi murder case is an important case. Though it has been many years, yet the investigation agency could not give a report.

There should be a speedy resolution to this case. As soon as the report comes to the court, the state party will try to finish the trial quickly, he said.

In this issue, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Advocate Anisul Huq recently said on the investigation into journalist couple Sagar-Runi’s murder case, time should be given as long as it takes to identify the real culprits.
