Sylhet City Corporation has cancelled the ongoing holding tax rate for 27 wards. Mayor of Sylhet City Corporation Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury told this information in a press conference at Zilla Parishad Auditorium after an emergency general meeting held in the meeting room of Nagar Bhaban on Friday (May 24) at 8 pm.
Presided over by the mayor, the decision was passed with unanimous consent of the councilors. It was decided to cancel all holdings tax and decided to re-assess the holdings tax for 42 wards.
In the press conference, Mayor Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury said that at the same time it has been decided to start the assessment program of the newly included 15 wards. Collection of holding tax due by July 31 will continue. He called for payment of dues.
He also said, respecting the demands of respectable citizens through discussions with the councilors, it has been decided to cancel the holding tax assessment re-assessment of 27 wards and start a new re-assessment of the holdings and at the same time start the assessment process of the newly included 15 wards.
He also said, “Earlier, I repeatedly told the honorable citizens that I will not take any decision that is detrimental to the people. As an elected representative of the people, it is my responsibility to value their views. Based on the opinion of the people and councilors, it has been decided to cancel the ongoing assessment and conduct a new re-assessment. He requested the residents of the city to pay the outstanding holding tax.
SCC Mayor Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury expressed his sincere gratitude for the ongoing assessment in view of my request.
The mayor also said, ‘any adverse situation will be resolved through discussion with the city residents for the welfare of the city. Public opinion will prevail in public institutions’.
Sylhet City Corporation Councilors, Chief Executive Officer Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury, Chief Executive Engineer Noor Azizur Rahman, Secretary and officials of various branches were present the meeting .
