The coast guard has rescued the 15 fishermen who went missing in the Bay of Bengal while fishing in the deep sea from Sarenga in Anwara.
Bangladesh Coast Guard East Zone rescued the 15 fishermen from a ship of the Myanmar Navy on Sunday (January 14) night.
Saint Martin Coast Guard Station Commander Lt Takyul Ahsan told media that fishermen along with trawlers were rescued by Coast Guard ships after receiving information from Myanmar Navy. Later they were released at night. They went home on their own.
Earlier on January 3, a fishing trawler named ‘Ma-Moni’ went to the sea to catch fish from the Gahira coast of Chattogram’s Anwara. There were 15 fishermen in the trawler. On January 4, their trawler was crippled by a broken engine shaft. After ten days there was no news of the boat. On January 14, a Myanmar fishing trawler spotted the crippled boat floating in the sea and towed the boat to Myanmar-Bangladesh waters.
A sailor of the boat told the owner of the boat over the phone that they are in the custody of the Myanmar Navy.
Obaidul Haque, the owner of the boat from Chittagong’s Anwara, then called ‘999’ and requested help. Duty Constable Noble Das relayed the message to the Coast Guard Control Room and the St Martin Coast Guard.
A rescue team of the St Martin Coast Guard went to the Myanmar-Bangladesh waters and rescued the crippled boat with 15 fishermen on board from the custody of the Myanmar Navy and brought it to St Martin.
