At least two persons were burnt to death when a fire broke out at 15 houses and shops at Palong Uttar Bazar in Shariatpur district early Friday.
The deceased were identified as Palash Boiragi, 25, son of Rabindranath Sarker of Madaripur and Bishwajit Sarker, 20, son of Rupchan Sarker. Bishwajit was a college student who joined the shop earlier this month, said Faridpur Fire Service Deputy Director Momtaz Uddin Ahmed.
He said, “The fire began at 5:00am on Friday. Four units of the fire brigade from Shariatpur and Madaripur went to the scene and brought the fire under control.”
Palong Bazar General Secretary Abdus Salam said, “The fire has caused at least Tk10 crore worth of damages.”
Confirming the incident, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Shariatpur Sadar Md Mahbubur Rahman Sheikh said, “The damage caused by the fire was yet to be determined”.
The bodies were sent to Shariatpur General Hospital morgue for autopsy, he said.
The tragic incident took place when they were sleeping inside a sweet shop at Palong Uttar Bazar, our Faridpur correspondent reports.
Meanwhile, fire also broke out at a yarn warehouse in Chattogram Port city’s Chaktai area on Friday.
The fire was brought under control after two hours of efforts by the fire fighters, said Jasim Uddin, Deputy Assistant Director of Chattogram Fire Service and Civil Defence.
Though losses could not be estimated, owner’s son Bijoy Barua said the warehouse had stored about Tk 50 lakh worth of nylon yarn inside.
