The people of the country’s northern and north-eastern regions are likely to suffer from short-term flood as the first day of Bengali month ‘Ashar’ begins on Thursday.
Meanwhile, water levels in the country’s major rivers are rising due to heavy shower in the upstream.
The people of Sunamganj, Moulvibazar and Sylhet districts have experienced heavy rain in the last two days as India’s mountain torrents have caused water levels to rise in all the rivers and streams of Sunamganj and Sylhetby several centimeters.

“There are possibilities for short-term seasonal flood at the end of this month in the northern region, while the people of north-eastern region will experience such type of flood within 72 hours,” Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan, Executive Engineer of Flood Forecasting Warning Centre (FFWC) under the Bangladesh Water Development Board told The New Nation on Thursday.
He said this short-term flood will be prolonged for 3-5 days.

“Heavy rain fall is occurring in the upstream as the monsoon has started. The river water is also rising in different areas,” he said.
According to FFWC report, water level rises in 79 points out of 109 points which are monitored by the WDB in the last 24 hours.
Due to heavy rainfall in the North-Eastern region and adjoining upstream, all major rivers of this region are rising rapidly.

According to the weather forecasting report, there is a chance of heavy to very-heavy rainfall in the North-Eastern region and adjoining upstream region of the country in the next 72-hours.
As a result, the major rivers of this region-Surma, Kushiyara, Manu, Khowai, Sarigowain, Jhalukhali, Bhugai-Kangsha, Someswari and Jadukata may rise rapidly and create a short-term flood situation in the low-lying areas of Sylhet and Sunamganj district at this time,
the FFWC report said.

Meanwhile, waters of the rivers Brahmaputra, Jamuna and Padma are in rising trend, while the Ganges River is in steady trend, which may continue in next 72 hours.
Due to heavy rainfall forecast in the Teesta-Dharla basin and adjoining upstream region in the next 24 hours, these rivers may rise rapidly at times too.
However, Surma, the main river of Sunamganj, is flowing slightly below the danger level, but the river is swelling.

As of Thursday morning, water was flowing 1.01 cm below the danger mark. Cherrapunji in India has recorded about 400 mm of rainfall in the last 48 hours. The risk of flooding is very low as the haors are still dry.
Meanwhile, the water of the Jadukata river overflowing from the hills coming down from India yesterday, the water is flowing over the Sunamganj-Tahirpur road Bishvambhpur Shaktia canal 100 meters over the sunken road. People are moving through this road with the risk of accidents.
Sunamganj Water Development Board Executive Engineer Mamun Howladar said that due to heavy rains in Sunamganj and Cherrapunji in India, the water level of all the rivers has increased but nowhere has exceeded the danger level.

More rain is likely in Sunamganj and Cherrapunji in India in the next few days. If the rainfall continues the danger level will be exceeded likely in different water bodies of the district.
