BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday called for unity while attending an iftar mahfil organised by his party honouring politicians in the Ladies Club in the capital.
“We are having a very hard time. A fascist government has grabbed state power, violating the voting rights of the people.
It is time to forge strong unity through the anti-democratic government,” Mirza Fakhrul said while presiding over the event.
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman joined the event virtually. Notably, a number of Jamaat leaders were present in the iftar mahfil.
Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, Secretary General Miah Golam Parwar, Nayeb-e-Amir Dr. Abdullah Mohammad Taher, and Joint Secretary General Moulana Abdul Halim were present in the programme.
Mirza Fakhrul said, “We are working to bring all democratic forces together to make the one-point demand stronger for restoring people’s rights in the country.”
He expressed optimism that the victory would take place in the final movement.
Jamaat Amir Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said, “All 18 crore of the people of the country are now oppressed.
We have to be united and make the agitation against the government strong.
We will win, inshaAllah.”
Apart from these, Mirza Fakhrul attended another programme earlier in the day of the distribution Eid gifts among families of the victims of enforced disappearance on behalf of the party’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, organised by Aamra BNP Paribar (We are BNP Family) at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office.
In the event, Mirza Fakhrul said 80 percent of BNP leaders and activists faced torture unleashed by the ‘fascist’ Awami League government.
“The Awami League cannot keep power without unleashing torture and repressing people. Their first victim of suppression is BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, and she is fighting continuously,” the BNP leader said.
He said when the BNP started a movement against the fascist government, one-party rule, or one woman’s rule, aiming to establish people’s rights and democracy, they started repression against the BNP men.
“They have created such an environment of fear where no one can talk or write freely,” Mirza Fakhrul said.
Urging unity of all forces, the BNP secretary general said, “As a democratic political party, we are doing more than our capacity to free the country from this horrible situation.”
There is no alternative to forging unity like in 1969, 1971, and 1990, when people fought against fascist, autocratic regimes to restore democracy, he added.
