City Desk :
Mentioning that polythene is harmful for the environment, Textiles and Jute Minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak on Tuesday said stern action will be taken to stop the use of polythene.

“Aimed at preventing the use of polythene bags, we have produced jute bags named ‘Sonali Bag’,” he said while addressing a press conference at his Secretariat office here, reports BSS.

Nanak said, “We will take actions in line with a roadmap after the upcoming Ramadan in different areas across the country, and we told Deputy Commissioners (DCs) to remain ready for the task of stopping the use of polythene bags.

The Textiles and Jute Ministry along with all the related ministries, including the Environment Ministry, will take stern actions to stop polythene after holding a joint meeting, he added.

Nanak also said the textiles and jute ministry, following the ‘Mandatory Jute Packaging Act, 2010’, has ensured the use of 19 jute-made goods.

“Thus, jute-made goods are being exported to various countries . . . The demand for jute-made goods has increased in the global markets to a great extent.”

He also said a project has been implemented to facilitate the import of jute seeds and fertilizer for the farmers.

“Besides, we will invent new varieties of jute seeds to enhance jute production,” he mentioned.

So, owners of jute mills will be able to collect raw jute from farmers easily and the growers will get fair price of their agri-produce, he added.
