DU expels six students for extortion

The Dhaka University (DU) administration has temporarily expelled six students for their involvement in extortion and looting and expelled permanently one proctoral team member and suspended six others for setting up floating shop in the campus to take money.

Besides, the DU administration expelled a total of 60 students for various periods in charge of taking illegal paths in examination according to the recommendation of the disciplinary board of the university.

The decision was taken at the Syndicate meeting of the university on Sunday held at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban chaired by vice-chancellor professor ASM Maksud Kamal. After the meeting, several syndicate members confirmed the matter to The New Nation.

The six students who have been expelled for extortion also asked for written reply within seven days why they should not explled permanently.

Of them, four students have been expelled in charge of extortion and beating at Suhrawardy Udyan on January 20 this year.

They are Md Azha Islam of Applied Math, Mortuza Hasan Khan of the Music Department, Md. Azim Mahmud Tawsif of History Department and Md. Riyad Mal of International Relations Department. They all are students of 2021-22 academic secession.

Besides, two students have been expelled in charge of torturing and demanding ransom after detaining a college student at shahnewaz bhaban of Sir A F Rahman Hall.

The two students are Zahid Sheikh and Md. Shahreen Islam. Both are students of Ceramic Department of 2020-21 academic secession.

Besides, Abdul Ohed, a student of the 2018-19 academic year of the Persian language and literature department, uploaded a video about the centenary monument under construction on the university’s Facebook. The students was also expelled for one year for abusing members of the university in non-audible language.

Besides, the admin and moderators of the Facebook group will be questioned at the proctor’s office regarding the anonymous post, a Syndicate Member said.

However, a national English daily published news about the extortion of the proctorial team by setting up floating shops in the university and later the university formed an investigation committee. After investigation, the university administration expelled permanently Shamim Hossain, a tokenman of the Pictorial Office as sufficient evidence was found against him for accepting donations.

Apart from this, Shamim Hossain’s associate Kishan Chandra Das, Amit Sarkar, Mr. Shudarshan Halder, Md. Masum Sheikh, Md. Rafiq Ghazi and Md Mithu Mir have been asked to submit a written report in that case.
