The International Day of Persons with Disabilities and National Disabled Day were observed in different districts on Monday. Social Service Department and related organizations took up various programmes marking the days. Our correspondents and agencies report :
Staff Reporter, from Kishoreganj reports: Social Service Department, social organisations and Kishoreganj District Administration jointly arranged a colourfull rally, discussion, cultural function and distributing wheel chairs marking the International Disabled and National Disabled Day on Monday.
A discussion meeting on disabled people, SDG 17 goals in Bangladesh held at Child Families Complex (Girls) in the town on Monday.
DC Md Sarowar Moshed Chowdhury and Police Super Md. Mashrukur Rahman Khaled BPM attended as chief and special guest while Deputy Director of Social Welfare Md Kamruzzaman Khan in the chair. It was addressed among others by Civil Surgeon Dr. Habibur Rahman, ADC (Education & ICT) Abdullah-al Masud, Ex. Princial Professor Rafiqul Islam Khan, Hindu Kallan Trusti Advocate Dolon Bhowmik, Md. Shahabuddin, Women leader Bilkis Begum and Social Service Officer Salma Khanam.
DC Md. Sarowar Morshed Chowhdury said that, the government has undertaken a plan to distribute smart card among the challenged people.
BSS from Rangpur reports : Government officials at a discussion here on Monday stressed on engaging comprehensive steps for mainstreaming of the disabled people with development activities for building a prosperous nation.
They made these observations at a post-rally discussion jointly arranged by the district administration and Department of Social Service (SSD) at Police Community Hall in observance of the 27th International and National Day of Persons with Disabilities-2018 and the 20th National Disabled Day-2018.
The DSS in association with other organisations working for welfare of the disabled people organised the rally, drawing and sports competitions, cultural programmes and prize distribution ceremony marking the day.
Rangpur Protibondhi Foundation, Badhir Sangha, World Vision Bangladesh, Prottyasha Protibondhi Nari O Shishu Unnayan Sangstha, Rangdhanu Zila
Protibondhi Adhikar Sangstha, Leprosy Mission, Dristi Sangstha, Rangdhanu,
ADD International, Protibondhi Seba o Sahajjya Kendra and other organisations extended cooperation to observe the day.
Government and NGO officials, persons with disabilities, leaders of various organisations working for welfare of the disabled persons, professionals, students and human rights activists participated in the rally.
Divisional Commissioner Muhammad Joynul Bari attended the discussion as the chief guest with Deputy Director (Local Government) for Rangpur Ruhul Amin Mian in the chair.
Deputy Inspector General for Rangpur Range of Bangladesh Police Devdas Bhattacharyya, Civil Surgeon Dr Abu Md Zakirul Islam, Deputy Director of the DSS Abdur Razzaque addressed the discussion as special guests.
The speakers highly lauded the government for implementation of massive programmes for the disabled persons aiming at mainstreaming them with the society through ensuring their rights for their development and empowerment.
Devdas Bhattacharyya put maximum importance on establishing disabled-friendly tmosphere for ensuring rights to education, health care and social honour with dignity for the disabled people to properly flourish their inherent talents and abilities.
The chief guest laid emphasis on engaging coordinated GO-NGO efforts and changing social mindset toward the physically challenged people in ensuring their rights and proper development to make them self-reliant in the society.
BSS from Gaibandha says: A total of 105 persons with disabilities of seven upazilas in the district got devices from Integrated Disability Service Centre (IDSC) here on Monday.
On December 03, the 27th International and 20th National Day of Persons with Disabilities were observed in the district as elsewhere in the country.
This year’s theme of the day is, “Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equity”.
Marking the day, IDSC under Jatiya Protibandhi Unnanyan Foundation chalked out the programmes.
A post rally function on assistive devices distribution to the persons with disabilities was also held on the premises of IDSC at Shukhnagar area of the town here with disability affairs officer Akhtar Hossain in the chair.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) addressed the function and formally inaugurated the assistive devices distribution to the persons with disabilities as the chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion DC Sebastin Rema underscored the need for establishing a congenial, sound and friendly atmosphere for the disabled persons to ensure a dignified position for them in the society.
Terming the disabled persons as the integral part of the society, the DC mentioned that time has come to bring them into the mainstream of the society for overall development of the nation.
BSS from Rajshahi adds: Speakers at a post-rally discussion here on Monday underscored the need for ensuring congenial atmosphere to make an end to discrimination against the persons with disabilities to enable them leading a decent life.

Department of social service (DSS) and District Administration organized the discussion at Shishu Academy Auditorium marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities and National Disabled Day.
Chaired by DSS Deputy Director Rashedul Kabir, the meeting was addressed, among others, by its Divisional Deputy Director Hasina Momtaz, Member of National Social Welfare Council Mozammel Haque, DSS Assistant Director Soheli Rashid, District Children Affairs Officer Monjur Murshed and Person with Disability Affairs Officer Shariat Ullah.
The discussants unanimously emphasised the need for establishing a sound and friendly atmosphere for the disabled persons to ensure a dignified position for them in society.
They appreciated the theme of the day, “Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equity”, saying it was important to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
