A 65-year-old man named Surya Mridha has been arrested by the police for raping a 16-year-old mentally challenged girl in Ishwardi. He is the girl’s grandfather by relation. He was sent to jail by the Pabna court on Tuesday (March 19) afternoon. Earlier on Monday (March 18) night, he was arrested in Jaynagar Madhyapara village of Chalimpur Union of the upazila.
According to local sources and the statement filed with the police station, since the death of the mentally challenged girl’s father, she used to stay with her grandmother in various houses in Jayanagar Madhyapara of Chalimpur. In the meantime, the girl’s mother was married elsewhere, so she lived with her grandmother. On the day of the incident last March 14 around 11:30 pm, the girl was sleeping at home. The girl’s grandmother and grandfather’s sister (Surya Mridha’s wife) go to Dapuniya to see the dead body of a close relative. Taking this opportunity alone, Surya Mridha entered the house and threatened and raped the disabled girl. Since then the girl was upset.
When the grandmother asked what happened, the girl burst into tears and told the grandmother everything. She filed a written complaint against husband Surya Mridha at Ishwardi police station. After receiving the complaint, the police arrested Surya Mridha from the house and brought him to the police station.
