Hope surrounding Bhutan’s SEZ rising

Bhutan’s King Zigmey Kheser Namgeal Wangchuk visited Kurigram Economic Zone at Madhabram under Bhogdanga union in Kurigram Sadar upazila on Thursday (March 28).
Information minister MA Arafat, state minister for shipping Khalid Mahmud Choudhury, MP of Kurigram constituency-2 and 4 Dr. Hamidul Haque Khandoker and Biplab Hasan Palas respectively, chairman of BEZA Sheikh Yousuf Harun, DC Mohammad Saidul Arif, SP Al Asad Mohammad Mahfujul Islam, and Mayor of Kurigram municipality Kaziul Islam were, among others, present to receive the king there. Later he went to Bhurungamari land port by road and entered into India for Bhutan leaving Bangladesh.
Local elites and businessmen are expecting the king’s visit to Kurigram as positive. The Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a public meeting in the Kurigram Government College ground in 2015 declared to set up an Economic Zone in Kurigram. The people of Kurigram are very happy with the visit of Butan’s King Zigmey Kheser Namgeal Wangchuk declaration of Bhutan’s Special Economic Zone. The gate of new possibility will be opened with the international economic zone as economic hub. The scenario of the district will be changed following the development. Earlier a four member delegation led by Butanes ambassador in Bangladesh Rinchen Kuensil visited the spot on March 10.
It is learnt that the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a bilateral meeting in London on 2023 proposed to the King and Queen of the Bhutan for establishment a special Economic Zone in Kurigram. They agreed with the proposal. Meanwhile, a total of 133.92 acres of khas land at Madhabram mouza under Bhugdanga union in north-east side of the Dharla Bridge beside Kurigram-Bhurungamari road, 2.5 kilometer far from Kurigram Zero point has been handed over to Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority (BEZA) by Kurigram district administration.
