SCBA election: Khokon President, Monjurul Gen Secy

Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon from the BNP’s Blue Panel was elected as the President and Advocate Shah Monjurul Hoque from the Awami League’s White Panel was elected the General Secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) for 2024-2025.

The election sub-committee convener senior lawyer Abul Khayer announced the results around 1:30am on Sunday at the SCBA auditorium.

Mahbub Uddin Khokon bagged 2,622 votes, defeating Abu Sayeed Sagor, who got 2,539.
White panel candidate Shah Monjurul Hoque got 2,891 votes, while his nearest rival blue panel candidate Md Ruhul Quddus (Kajal) bagged 1,702 votes.

Out of total 14 posts, the Awami League-backed White panel got 10 posts, including two Vice-Presidents, two Assistant General Secretaries, Treasurer and four executive members; while BNP-backed panel got the rest four posts, including President and three executive members.

Meanwhile, a Dhaka court on Sunday placed pro-BNP lawyer and Secretary candidate Ruhul Quddus Kazal on a four-day remand in a case filed over Friday’s violence over the Supreme Court Bar Association election.

Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Nurul Huda Chowdhury of Dhaka passed the order after Investigation Officer Abul Kalam Azad, Inspector of the Detective Branch (DB), produced him before the court with a seven-day remand prayer.

Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal was arrested on Saturday near his Purana Paltan chamber in the capital.

On Friday, Assistant Attorney General Saifur Rahman Siddique Saif, who was allegedly assaulted during the violence, filed the case with Shahbagh Police Station naming independent candidate Nahid Sultana Juthi, Barrister Kazal and 18 others.

On Saturday, another Dhaka court placed five lawyers- Kazi Bashir Ahmed, Osman Chowdhury, Tushar, Tariqul and Sumon on a three-day remand for interrogation after they were produced before the court with a five-day remand plea.
