Meat, potato prices soar again

The prices of meat, such as beef and chicken, as well as potatoes, were notably higher yesterday compared to the previous week in the capital’s kitchen markets.

After surveying various markets like New Market, Kawran Bazar, Rampura, Malibagh, and Jatrabari, this correspondent found out that beef and chicken prices had surged within just a week.

Beef was being sold for Tk 650 to 800 per kg on Friday, with a subsequent increase of Tk 30 per kg on other days.

Similarly, mutton and goat meat were priced between Tk 1050 and 1150 per kg, experiencing a hike of Tk 50 per kg.

The price of broiler chicken has also increased; it was being sold at Tk 230 per kg, which was selling between Tk 190 and 200 only three days ago.

Apart from this, the price of Sonali chicken has also increased and is now being sold at Tk 340 per kg. Similarly, cock chicken is being sold at Tk 360 to 370 per kg, layer chicken at Tk 300 per kg, and indigenous (desi) chicken at Tk 650 to Tk 700 per kg.

It was also seen that the retail price of potatoes was also hiked by Tk5 to Tk7 per kilogramme at the capital’s kitchen markets.

Potatoes were found to be retailed at Tk40 to Tk42 per kg. However, the price of onions has fallen due to sufficient production and supply. Onions, which cost Tk100 to Tk110 per kg just a week ago, are now selling at Tk55 to Tk60 per kg.

Vegetable vendors said that the prices of other commodities in the grocery market, except potatoes, have remained stable. Meanwhile, they expressed fear that the price of potatoes may increase further.

Meanwhile, brinjals are being sold at Tk60 per kg, bitter gourd at Tk80, green papaw at Tk40, carrots at Tk40, and green chilies at Tk100 per kg.
Abdur Rashid, a grocery shopkeeper, said onion prices have come down due to good supply. However, the price of potatoes has increasedwith the hike in meat prices.

The traders in the sector said that prices of chicken increased due to price hikes for chicken food and broiler chicks.

The prices of almost all vegetables decreased, but the prices of newly arrived seasonal vegetables like drum sticks, string beans, and bitter gourd are higher, selling for between Tk 100 and 180 per kg based on quality.

Egg prices decreased by Tk 5 to 10 per dozen, and we were selling a dozen brown eggs at Tk 130, an egg duck at Tk 70 per hali (four pieces), and an egg of home-rearing hens at Tk 80 per hali (four pieces).
