No agenda to jail political leaders, says Quader

Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister, Obaidul Quader, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to public and national interest by stressing the necessity of taking decisive action against wrongdoers.

Quader assured that the government harbors no agenda to arbitrarily incarcerate political leaders or activists, including those from opposition parties.

“Persons who are miscreants, offenders, and wrongdoers must land in jail,” Quader stated firmly. “If anybody is involved with crimes, he or she must be indicted and punished accordingly.”

Quader’s remarks came during a ceremony at Dhaka University, where he placed a wreath on the grave of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam in commemoration of the poet’s 125th birth anniversary.

The minister highlighted Nazrul’s enduring legacy, noting that his fiery writings championed the rights of the oppressed and spurred resistance against injustice.

“The songs and poems of Poet Nazrul have inspired every democratic movement, from the anti-British struggle to the Liberation War,” Quader remarked. “Nazrul has enriched our literature, music, and culture.”

Addressing recent political tensions, Quader clarified that the government had no plans to target political figures, including those from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), following the elections.

However, he emphasized that individuals involved in violent activities, such as arson terrorism and armed attacks on innocent people, would face legal consequences.

“The communal evil forces are active under the leadership of BNP,” Quader added. “Awami League is determined to uproot these forces.”

Quader also paid homage to the deep connection between Poet Nazrul and the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

“After Bangladesh’s independence, Bangabandhu honored Nazrul by bringing him from Kolkata to Bangladesh as the National Poet,” affirmed the minister.

The event saw the attendance of several prominent Awami League leaders, including Presidium Member Dr. Mostafa Jalal Mahiuddin, Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, among others.
