Protest erupts as woman raped at JU

Four rapists were arrested by the Ashulia police as these accused are involved in a rape incident happened in Jahangirnagar University.

Meanwhile, protest erupted on Jahangirnagar Univesrsity campus as a woman was reportedly raped by a leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League’s (BCL) university unit including one of his associate on the university campus.

The four accused are: Mustafizur Rahman, ASM Mostafa Monwar Siddiki Sagar, Sabbir Hossain, and Hasanuzzaman while two others remained absconding.

Of the arrestees, Mustafizur Rahman, an international affairs secretary of BCL JU unit is the prime accused.

However, the court allowed police for a three day remand of the rapists to gather more information.

Meanwhile, Chairman of Human Rights Commission of Bangladesh Dr Kamal Uddin Ahmed in a statement said that the entire country was shocked due to the unprecedented, despicable incidents of rape and sexual assault several times in JU.

He demanded a quick, fair and impartial investigation in this incident and to identify the real culprits and ensure exemplary punishment, so as to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future.

The incident took place on Saturday night, the woman was raped while her husband was kept confined in the room no 317/A at Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall of the university.
After getting information, the proctorial body along with police rushed to the spot.

“Following their arrival, Shah Poran, a former student of JU International Relations under the academic session 2014-15 directed Sagar, Sabbir and Hasanuzzaman to break the lock of an exit point of the Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall,” JU Proctor ASM Firoz-ul-Hasan said.

Later, a case was filed against six people with the Ashulia Police Station in this connection under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

The accused are: Mustafizur Rahman, his associates Mamunur Rashid, Sagar Siddiki , Sabbir Hossain, Hasanuzzaman, and Md Murad. Mamunur Rashid was not a student of the university.

Abdullah Hil Kafi, Dhaka district’s additional police super (Crime and Ops and Traffic North division), confirmed the matter during a press conference on Sunday noon.

Sources within a Chief Judicial Magistrate Court Dhaka said, the arrestees are under a three-day remand for further investigation.

According to the victim, “Mamun rented a room in our house. When my husband visited the JU campus with her on Saturday, Mamun told him that he would be staying with Mostafizur at Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall for a few days.”

“My husband then called me over the phone and told me to bring some of Mamun’s clothes to the campus. When I went there, Mamun took his belongings to the hall.

Then they took me to the jungle near Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall and said my husband would arrive here. Then Mostafizur and Mamun raped me at the place,” she added.
