Stock market loses Tk49,000 crore market cap in a week

The country’s stock market witnessed a significant downturn, with prices declining for all five trading days last week.
It was known that Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) experienced a sharp drop in market capitalisation, losing Tk49,000 crore within just a week.
Throughout the week, all price indices fell as the share and unit prices of most companies declined. This decline marks the stock market’s fifth consecutive week of downturn, during which the DSE’s market capitalization has diminished by over Tk70,000 crore.
Out of the 69 companies participating in trading on the DSE, the prices of shares and units of 301 companies decreased, while the prices of 31 remained unchanged. In other words, the share and unit prices of 75 percent of the companies have fallen.
The market capitalization of the DSE stood at Tk6,99,635 crore at the end of the last working day of the week, down from Tk7,48,827 crore on the previous week’s last working day. This indicates a decrease of Tk49,192 crore or 6.57 percent in the DSE’s market capitalization during the week.
In the preceding week, the market capitalization decreased by Tk11,896 crore or 1.56 percent. Over the previous three weeks, it dropped by Tk1,291 crore or 17 percent. In total, the DSE’s market capitalization has decreased by Tk72,891 crore over a span of five weeks.
Meanwhile, the DSE’s main price index, DSEX, fell by 144.72 points or 2.27 percent in the last week. This follows a decline of 141.78 points or 2.27 percent in the preceding week. Over the previous three weeks, it decreased by 19.42 points or 31 percent, 62.30 points or 98 percent, and 37.10 points or 58 percent, respectively, culminating in a total decrease of 405.32 points over five weeks.
Similarly, the DSE-30 index, comprised of selected reputable companies, experienced a decline alongside the main price index, dropping by 42.76 points or 2.04 percent over the past week. The DSE Shariah index, consisting of companies adhering to Islamic Shariah principles, also saw a decrease of 36.09 points or 2.70 percent during the week.
Furthermore, all price indices fell in conjunction with the speed of transactions. The average daily transaction on the DSE amounted to Tk558.77 crore during the week, down from Tk810.61 crore in the previous week. This signifies a decrease of Tk251.84 crore or 31.07 percent in the average daily transaction value.
The total transaction on the DSE for the week amounted to Tk2,793.88 crore, compared to Tk4,053.05 crore in the previous week, representing an increase of Tk1,259.17 crore or 31.05 percent.
Fu-Wang Ceramics shares were the most traded on the DSE during the week, with transactions totaling Tk159.52 crore, accounting for 5.71 percent of the total trade. Shares of Golden Son ranked second, with transactions amounting to Tk125.32 crore, followed by Lovello Ice Cream with transactions totaling Tk112.10 crore.
Additionally, among the top ten traded companies were Orion Infusion, SS Steel, Central Pharmaceuticals, Alif Industries, Best Holding, Aftab Automobiles, and Fortune Shoes.
