In a bid to champion environmental conservation efforts, a symbolic campaign was recently orchestrated in Rangpur, spearheaded by prominent environmentalists and social organizations. The event, held adjacent to the Carmichael College Gate in the city, saw the active participation of several influential groups including DOPS, Coastal Living, Environment Working Group (CLEAN), and Bangladesh Working Group on Ecology and Development (BWGED).
The primary focus of the campaign was to advocate for a fair and equitable energy transition, ensuring paramount attention to environmental and social safeguards, labor standards, as well as transparency and accountability measures. Operating under the theme ‘Protect People and Planet over Profit,’ the campaign attracted a diverse coalition of members from civil society and concerned citizens from affected areas.
Addressing the gathering, Ujjwal Kumar Chakraborty, spokesperson for DOPS, emphasized the imperative for the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to revise its security policy to prioritize the protection of individuals from potential harm. He urged swift action from the ADB to adopt robust security policies that align with the campaign’s objectives.
The symbolic campaign serves as a poignant reminder of the collective responsibility to safeguard the environment and prioritize the well-being of communities over profit-driven agendas. With mounting concerns over environmental degradation and its repercussions on human life, initiatives such as these underscore the urgent need for concerted action to preserve our planet for future generations.
The organizers remain steadfast in their commitment to advancing environmental protection measures and call upon stakeholders at all levels to join hands in this noble endeavor.
