Road mishaps leave 10 people dead in two dists

A t least ten people were killed in separate road mishaps in Pirojpur and Faridpur districts on Friday.

In Pirojpur, seven people were killed and 10 others injured in a three-way collision among a bus, a battery-run auto rickshaw and a motorcycle on the Pirojpur-Parerhat road in Jhautla area under Sadar upazila of the district on Friday afternoon, reports BSS.

Four of the deceased were identified as Swapan, Naeem, Hemajet and Khairul. The identities of the other victims could not be known immediately.

All the deceased were riders of the motorcycle and passengers of the battery-run auto rickshaws.

The accident occurred when an Indurkani-bound passenger bus from Pirojpur bus stand hit a passenger-carrying battery-run auto-rickshaw going in the same direction on the way and it hit another motorcycle. At that time, the bus overturned the auto rickshaw and hit a tree on the side of the road around 12:30pm this afternoon, leaving three people dead on the spot and 14 others seriously injured, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sadar Police Station Md Ashikuzzaman said.

Police and fire service personnel rushed to the spot and recovered the injured and took them to Pirojpur Zilla Hospital, where on-duty doctor declared four of them dead, the OC said.

Later, five seriously injured were sent to Khulna and Barisal hospitals for better treatment, OC said.

The bodies of the deceased have been kept at Pirojpur Zilla Hospital. Legal action is under process in this regard.

Beside, Member of Parliament of Pirojpur-1 Constituency and Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock S M Rezaul Karim, MP, visited the spot, the OC added.

In Faridpur, three people died and at least 10 others were injured when a passenger bus overturned in Bhanga upazila of Faridpur early Friday morning.

The incident happened at Babnatala Bus Stand area on the Dhaka-Barishal Highway of the upazila, reports UNB.

Upon receiving the news, members of the Bhanga Fire Service and Highway Police rushed to the scene, rescued the injured, and admitted them to the Bhanga Upazila Health Complex. The bodies of the deceased were recovered and taken to the police station, said Bhanga Fire Service Station Manager Abu Zafar.

The Dhaka-bound bus named Imran Travels (Dhaka Metro-B-12-3020) that left Barishal on Thursday night lost control and overturned on the road. The bus was completely mangled, and the passengers inside were trapped, killing two people at the scene, he said. One of the deceased was identified as Shafikul Islam Suruj (45) of Pannduria village in Santhia Upazila of Pabna.

Assistant Sub-inspector Abu Saeed of Bhanga Highway Police confirmed the matter.
The identities of the other two deceased are yet to be found, he said.
