Writ on sealing eateries in residential bldgs

A writ petition was filed with the High Court on Sunday, seeking directives to shut down restaurants in all residential buildings.
The writ was filed in the aftermath of the devastating fire incident on the capital’s Bailey Road, which claimed 46 lives.

It also sought the arrest of the offenders who were responsible for the fire at the Green Cosy Cottage building on Bailey Road and compensation to the victims’ families.

Advocate Md. Eunus Ali Akond filed the writ petition.

Secretaries to the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, Ministry of Home Affairs, Cabinet Secretary, Inspector General of Police, Chairman of Rjauk, Mayors of Dhaka south and north city corporations, and others have been made respondents to the rule.

The petition will be placed before the bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Kazi Zinat Hoque for hearing, said lawyer Eunus Ali Akond.

At least 46 people were killed and over 20 others sustained severe injuries by a devastating fire on Thursday night. Meanwhile, firefighters rescued 70 people, including 42 in an unconscious state, from the rooftop and different floors of the seven-story Green Cosy Cottage.

Meanwhile, a case was filed by police on Friday night over the Bailey Road fire incident. Police on Saturday detained Hamimul Haque Bipul, the manager of the Green Cosy Cottage building, in connection with the fire in the capital’s Bailey Road area.

Earlier, three others-Anwarul Haque and Shafiqur Rahman Rimon, owners of Cha Chumuk restaurant, and Md. Jisan, manager of Kacchi Bhai restaurant, were apprehended.
