DU Correspondent :
The leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) staged a protest rally to counter the ongoing demonstration of BUET students and the decision to ban student politics on the BUET campus.

BCL also demanded the reintroduction of student politics at BUET.
The ruling party’s student organisation, BCL, carried out their protest rally at central Shaheed Minar in the capital on Sunday.

After the protest, BCL members, led by its president Saddam Hossain, marched toward BUET campus with a massive procession and placed floral wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman located beside BUET Shahid Minar.

However, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) students protested for three days against student politics on campus by boycotting all sorts of class examinations.

The students did not stage any demonstration on Saturday but refrained from sitting in examinations as part of the protest.

BUET Vice-Chancellor Satya Prasad Majumder said , “Only two students were present in today’s examination.” He added, “We would like them (the agitating students) to continue the examination, so that their careers are not ruined.”

BUET authorities banned all kinds of politics on campus following the tragic death of university student Abrar Fahad, who was tortured by Chhatra League leaders and activists in October 2019.

Despite attempts by BCL to function on the BUET campus several times after the incident, they were deterred by student protests.

“An enquiry committee has been formed. They will verify the students’ demands. If someone has committed an offense, action will be taken as per university rules,” added BUET Vice Chancellor.

Meanwhile, leaders and activists of BCL gathered at Shaheed Minar with processions from different halls of Dhaka University and various Dhaka Metropolitan units.
