DU Correspondent :
BUET students persist in their demand for a politics-free campus, despite the fact that the High Court has stayed a notification banning student politics at the Bangladesh University of Engi

neering and Technology (Buet). As a result, there is no bar to continue student politics in BUET anymore. During a press conference at the BUET administration building on Monday, students voiced their stance.

Regarding the High Court’s suspension, they stated in their written statement, “We demanded to the BUET administration that the opinion of ordinary students should be properly presented to the judiciary.

We are united and unwavering in our demand for no student politics on campus.”

Furthermore, they added, “Student politics that nurtures ragging culture and abuse of power, which victimises innocent students, has never brought any good for us.”

In light of the High Court’s statement affirming the permissibility of student politics at BUET, Vice-Chancellor Satya Prasad Majumdar has granted clearance for the return of student politics on campus, citing the court order.

“We have to accept whatever the High Court says. A court order must be obeyed. To implement the order, we have to go through some process,” stated the vice chancellor.

He emphasised the importance of mutual discussion among students, teachers, and administration to maintain discipline in the campus political environment.

“Earlier, there was the Engineering University Central Students’ Union. Now its activities are suspended. We will address this matter based on discussions between teachers, students, and the administration,” he added.

On the other hand it was seen that a faction of the Chhatra League has paid tribute to Bangabandhsu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman near Shaheed Minar of BUET, illustrating a divergence of opinions within the student body.

It was known that Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) has made several attempts to reintroduce politics on campus, despite its previous ban following the tragic death of Abrar Fahad, allegedly tortured by BCL leaders.

A group of like-minded Chhatra League students paid tribute by laying flowers at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman near Shaheed Minar of BUET.

Eleven students participated in this event, including Hasin Azfar, Information Technology Affairs Secretary of the Chhatra League and a former BUET student. Ten other students are also known as Chhatra League supporters.
